German: from an old Germanic female personal name composed of the elements brun armour, protection + hild battle. In so far as it is found at all in modern use, it is a literary name. In Germanic legend, Brunhilde is a warrior queen, wife of Gunther, who plays a central role in the Nibelungenlied. She appears as Brynhild in the Icelandic Volsungasaga, where she is the chief of the Valkyries, a group of supernatural warrior maidens who collect the slain after a battle and carry them off to Valhalla. She is also a central figure in Richard Wagner's opera cycle The Ring of the Nibelungs. Wagner's Brünnhilde is a Valkyrie, daughter of Wotan, chief of the gods, who defies her father to help the lovers Siegmund and Sieglinde. As a punishment she is immolated on a mountain top, surrounded by a wall of fire. Her rescue by Siegfried, the son of Siegmund and Sieglinde, has a tragic outcome, leading to universal destruction. The character of Brunhilde may have a historical basis in the person of Brunhilda (?534–613), a powerful Frankish queen.
